Confused about what’s legal when it comes to tinting your car windows in California? You’re not alone. California has specific regulations around window tint percentages, reflectivity, and medical exemptions. At Low Price Auto Glass & Window Tinting, we help drivers across Dublin, Pleasanton, Livermore, and the Bay Area stay compliant — while still enjoying the benefits of premium window film.

California window tinting laws

🚘 What’s Legal in California in 2025?

Here’s a quick overview of California window tinting laws:

Front side windows: Must allow more than 70% of light in

Back side & rear windows: Any tint darkness is allowed

Windshield: Non-reflective tint only on the top 4 inches

No red, amber, or blue tint is permitted on any vehicle

Reflectivity: Must not be more reflective than a standard window

🏥 What About Medical Exemptions?

Drivers with certain medical conditions may qualify for exemptions allowing darker window tint. This requires a physician’s signed statement and registration with the California DMV.

🛑 Why Comply?

Non-compliance can lead to:

• Fix-it tickets

• Fines up to $197 per violation

• Removal of the tint
